Leak Detection Reminders

Rural water users should actively prevent and check for frozen pipes during cold snaps. If pressure drops, or if water is lost while neighbors have service, pipes may be frozen.
Key Reminders for Rural Water Users:
  • Extended Absences:Seasonal water users should be shutting water off at the curb stop and for those leaving their property for an extended period of time, have a neighbor check your home, or consider turning off the main valve. Periodically check that furnaces have not quit working and that doors / windows have not blown open and are sealed properly.
  • Preventative Measures: Keep a small, pencil-lead-sized stream of water running in at least one faucet to prevent freezing.
  • Unheated Areas: Inspect pipes in attics, basements, crawl spaces, and garages, as these mimic outside temperatures.
  • Check Meters: Inspect your water meter for freezing, as this is a common, costly issue in rural areas.
  • Technology: Consider using Wi-Fi water leak and freeze detectors that provide alerts to your phone.
